KEEP YOUR DECK LOOKING GREAT

Deck Staining Tips Winter is coming, is your deck ready to handle the harsh elements ahead? Snow, ice and sleet can be very damaging to the surface of your deck. We all enjoy our decks, but we don’t enjoy the maintenance or necessarily know how to take care of the deck. Here are some deck staining tips to keep your deck looking great and protect it during the tough, cold winter months. A little work now, will provide the necessary protection and you’ll be ready to relax on your beautiful deck at the first sign of spring.
Preparation Tips Remove any lawn furniture, grills and/or planters from the deck. Cover landscaping with drop cloths. Surface Preparation Tips Wood must be free of all dirt, mildew, mold and waterproofers. Previously painted, stained or clear-seal wood must be stripped. Replace any nails screws that are popping up from the deckboards. Replace badly weather and cracked boards. Sand any splinters that are protruding from the wood. Clean surface and let dry. Check for dry-time based on manufacturer’s instructions. Staining, Sealing the Deck Tip – if you need more than one container of stain, mix them together to ensure color uniformity. Move pad back and forth to condition pad and spread the stain/sealer evenly across the pad. Start at the end of a deckboard, place the DeckMate brushes in the gap between the boards and apply the material. Open and close the control knob for more or less material. Keep a wet edge while staining to ensure even coverage and reduce streaking. Finishing the Job Never pour left over stain/sealer down the drain or storm sewer. Check community regulations or with your local waste collector to see how the extra material should be discarded.
