New coating of a warehouse with airless spray technology

It was no accident that John Kerry Painter & Decorator chose to spray. John Kerry, a painter & decorator based in Middlesbrough, UK was asked to paint new premises for AF Accident Repair Centres. They were moving to a new accident repair centre to accommodate their expanding business in Dudley. As the surface was brickwork and breeze block, spraying was the obvious solution so he could cover the highly textured surface.

John chose the WAGNER Superfinish 23 Pro airless paint sprayer which is a diaphragm pump machine. Compared to piston pump sprayers, diaphragm pumps generally allow 10% longer hose length meaning they are ideal for very large structures. This sprayer can be used with a 30m hose but John just used the standard 15m airless hose which is supplied with the machine. This was perfectly long enough for the sprayer to be positioned on the floor and to use a cherry picker without needing to move the machine. John commented that, “not having to keep moving material about the site as you would normally with brushes and roller was a massive time saver, as well as being less tiring.”

The machine comes with a direct suction hose or can be used with a hopper. John chose the larger 20 litre hopper for ease of refilling, changing paint types and cleaning the sprayer. The hopper also makes it really mobile when he did want to move the machine about the site.

The paint was diluted by adding about 10% water but it was still quite thick. The temperature did not help as it didn’t get above freezing while the painting was taking place in the winter. The SF23 Pro comes with the Vector Pro 4-finger gun which was used with a 417 Tip and nozzle extension for extra reach.

John was very happy with the coverage and made sure he overlapped each pass by about 30-50%, effectively giving two coats of paint at a time. The bottom half of the wall was painted in a grey colour and above it was given a coat of white paint. The job from start to finish was completed in 5 days and the customer was delighted with the speed at which it was done. This meant they could quickly get on with the rest of the work needed to open up their new accident repair centre.

No matter whether you are a decorator or applying other heavy duty materials, the SuperFinish range from Wagner has a solution for you.
