Cleaning

A clean substrate is essential: 

  • Remove all loose debris, dust, mould, algae, oils, grease, and chalky residues before spraying. 

  • For robust exterior surfaces, pressure washing with an appropriate detergent or degreaser is effective, followed by thorough drying.

  • Sand surfaces as needed to remove old coatings or to smooth rough textures. Use the correct grit for the substrate (coarser for heavy removal, finer for finishing). 

  • After sanding, always wipe or tack the surface to remove dust.

Masking and Protection

Effective masking protects the rest of the job site and ensures crisp edges where coatings meet non‑painted areas. Properly secured masking also prevents materials from being disturbed by air movement, whether from high‑volume, low-pressure (HVLP) or XVLP sprayers with extra air flow or airless spray systems.

What to Mask

Key items to mask before spraying include: 

  • Windows, doors, and frames 

  • Architraves and skirtings 

  • Fixtures, fittings, and hardware 

  • Floors, built‑in furniture, and flooring in interiors 

Use professional‑grade masking tape, plastic sheeting, masking paper, and dust sheets, ensuring edges are firmly sealed to prevent seepage and movement. Once all masking is in place, check that the tape and masking film are firmly secured before spraying 

Techniques for Effective Masking

  • Press tape down firmly along edges to create a complete seal. 

  • Cover large areas with plastic or dust sheets secured with tape.  

  • Maintain protection continuity: overlap sheets and check seams for gaps. 

  • When spraying, keep an eye on the masking film. If the airflow from the sprayer causes the film to move or lift, stop and secure it with additional masking tape to prevent overspray and help maintain a clean, professional finish. 

A well‑masked and securely protected work area prevents unwanted overspray, reduces clean-up time, and ensures your project maintains a professional standard. 

Job Site Protection and Overspray Control

Containment Barriers

On larger job sites, consider portable barriers or temporary partitions to isolate the spray area and prevent drift onto sensitive surfaces or neighbouring properties. Static airflow and ventilation controls help manage overspray in enclosed areas.

Ground Protection

  • Use heavy-duty dust sheets or protective films on floors, walkways, and landscaping. 

  • Protect nearby vehicles, plant and materials.

This kind of protection saves hours of cleaning and prevents paint damage claims from clients or subcontractors. 

When the spraying is complete, carefully remove the masking tape, pulling it back slowly and evenly to help achieve a clean edge
