Waffle ceiling respray in a Bar and Canteen connected to Guildford Cathedral, Surrey (UK)

The restoration and respray of a waffle ceiling can be a time consuming exercise unless you are using the latest spray paint technology and heat. This makes the whole process run smoothly, reducing the painting time from many days down to a few hours.

The project: Kevin Steer and Martin Paine from Martin Paine Property Maintenance won the contract to repaint this waffle ceiling in the Bar and Canteen connected to Guildford Cathedral in the UK. The Cathedral has been used in many films including the supernatural horror film, The Omen.

Waffle ceilings got their name from the repeating design which resembles the surface of a waffle. They are often used in large rooms to add interest to the ceilings and make what could be a bland space into a design feature. However, they are notoriously hard to paint as there are so many angles, corners and edges which makes them very time consuming and difficult to paint using a traditional brush application.

The product used: Therefore, the decision was taken to hire a decorator who was able to spray paint. The machine used was the powerful WAGNER SF23 Plus and the 30 metre H326 TempSpray Heated Hose. A heated hose reduces the paint's viscosity, resulting in an improved paint application with better coverage whilst reducing any overspray. This was the ideal choice to cover the difficult to reach surfaces and ensure an even coverage of paint, avoiding drips and runs. The 30 meter hose also meant the machine could be located in position without it needing to be moved and the entire jobsite could be reached. A 20 litre hopper was also used to aid loading the paint and speed up the cleaning process afterwards.

The time frame: The renovation of the waffle ceiling, in preparation for painting, took three people two days to complete. Cracks in the ceiling needed to be repaired, filled and sanded prior to painting.

The Waffle ceiling was then spray painted by one person with two coats of white emulsion paint with each coat taking just over 90 minutes.

The Results:

The waffle ceiling now has a fresh coat of paint to highlight this simple but attractive design for visitors to the canteen at Guildford Cathedral to enjoy for years to come.
