Painting geometric wall designs: creative wall design with Eva Brenner

Lines, circles, triangles: If you're looking for a new wall design, you can't get past this trend. Are you wondering whether you should spray or paint the colour? With the paint sprayer, you can spray geometric shapes and patterns on the wall more quickly and conveniently. Your room gets a modern design and hidden corners get a whole new effect through striking accents and contrasts.

DIY expert and interior design graduate Eva Brenner shows how easy it is to completely transform a living room with a geometric pattern on the wall quickly using a paint sprayer.

Instructions: Simple geometric wall design, single-colour wall painting

Inspired by a beautiful, antique pink armchair, Eva has chosen an effect-based wall design in pink. But any other shade is also possible. When designing your room, feel free to incorporate your desired colour once again in accessories or pieces of furniture.

Use the accents and patterns only on one wall and not in the whole room, otherwise the effect is tiring on the eyes. The other walls should be designed rather discreetly.

Step 1: Masking the room and furniture

Cover your furniture and decorations with dust sheets – or remove items from the room. A painter's dust sheet will protect the floor from paint and provide a secure footing. To prevent the sheet from slipping, we recommend fixing it to the skirting boards with masking tape. This lets you kill two birds with one stone – the substrate stays in place and the skirting boards are already masked off. Tape all surfaces that are not to be sprayed to the contours of the geometric shapes with masking tape and film. These may include the adjoining walls or even the ceiling. 15 – -20 cm will be sufficient.

If you want to change the basic colour of the wall, this would be the first step.

Step 2: Spray wall

If you've decided on painting a relatively large wall, ask a second person to help with the masking work. This saves time and is also twice as much fun! The ideas for different geometric patterns on the wall are limitless.

Now spray the entire surface in your chosen colour. Our wall is already white, so we can start right away. Once the new colour has dried well, you can use the masking tape to create your individual pattern - no matter whether you prefer diagonal or straight lines. The masked areas will remain white, while the rest will shine in the chosen colour.

Circle shapes: organic and calming

Circles can also be easily conjured up on the wall with the paint sprayer and a few other tools. Round shapes have a harmonious, calm effect in interior design. Use the stencil and masking technique for wall design: For circles as wall design, simply make a suitable circular template from cardboard with a recess in the desired circle shape and stick it to the wall with masking tape. To pre-draw a large circle shape on the cardboard, you can easily make your own large compass with a pencil, thread and some tape. To do this, tie the thread to the pencil and attach the thread to the desired centre of the circle with tape. Now draw the circle shape with the pencil and your preliminary drawing is ready! Cut out the circle and attach the homemade stencil to the wall. Now fill the inner surface using the paint sprayer.

Triangle pattern: modern flair for the wall

Triangles are a popular symbol in fashion as well as in interior design. On the wall, triangular geometric patterns become a contemporary head turner in your living room. When you paint triangles on the wall, you have numerous creative options, such as creating triangles of different sizes that criss-cross the wall, as Eva has already demonstrated. You can opt for a wall design with symmetrical triangles: For this, tape off the edge areas of the triangles over a large area so that no paint gets beyond the edges. Then fill in the triangular shape with the paint sprayer at an even distance from the wall.

Checkerboard pattern: minimalist and trendy

The chequerboard pattern is not only in fashion: This geometric pattern is also an interesting head turner when designing the wall. For example, it can beautify a child's room and help them recognise colours. The laser spirit level is also used for marking. Then use tape to stick the squares for the chess pattern at regular intervals and then carefully fill in the squares.

Diamond pattern: Single or multi-coloured accents

If you like it precise, for example in the form of a diamond pattern, you can mark out the shapes in advance with a pencil and a laser spirit level. The laser spirit level projects a straight line at the desired angle onto the wall and the painter's tape only needs to be aligned with it. Eye-catching and multi-coloured diamond patterns are good for separating a specific living area from the rest of the room, such as the dining area from the living room.

Don't skimp on the masking tape. High-quality tapes adhere better to the wall with minimal gaps between the tape and wall surface.

How can you achieve clean, straight edges for colour transitions? What is sealing?

For clean edges always pre-spray the wall in the base colour. This is especially important on uneven surfaces, such as woodchip wallpaper. For this purpose, it is a good idea to "seal" the taped area with white paint (for example). In other words: simply paint over the edges of the masking tape. The base colour will fill all uneven areas and prevent runs in the stripe colour applied later.

When the wall is dry, you can change the paint and get ready to spray the surfaces in your chosen colour. Eva sprays at a constant distance and squats down when applying the paint in the lower area so that the paint jet hits the wall as close to a right angle as possible. She also takes care to ensure that the sprayed paint stripes overlap slightly – this ensures good coverage in a single pass.

Pull the masking tape off the wall while the paint is still damp and allow the new wall paint to dry. Eva is thrilled with the clean and sharp edges!

What should you look for when choosing geometric patterns in combination with certain colours so that everything looks harmonious?

Ask yourself the following question: What effect do I want to achieve with my interior design? Natural colours such as brown, beige, forest green or even grey tones radiate harmony and tranquillity and therefore work well in the bedroom. Bright green tones create spring feelings and have a mood-lifting effect - many use them as a highlight for wall design in the kitchen.

Colourful smaller triangles or dots in the children's room help children to name colours and learn to distinguish between them. The same works for multi-coloured areas on the wall with white dots.
Important: Even if your child would prefer it to be very colourful , you should make sure that it is not too bright so that their eyes can also calm down again.

Triangle patterns in different colour combinations look classy and modern. Muted, rich greens, warm earth tones, dark blues and muted yellows are currently popular for wall design.

Checkerboard patterns look particularly strong in contrasting colours, i.e. quite classically in black and white, but also in several colours such as pink, light green and white.

The ideal paint sprayer for simple DIY room design with geometric shapes

The WAGNER Universal Sprayer W 590 FLEXiO is Eva Brenner's reliable companion for creative projects. The unit can be adjusted exactly to your needs: This allows you to precisely adjust the air and paint volume and to set the spray jet horizontally or vertically and wide or narrow, depending on the desired working direction.

Make sure that the paint is already at room temperature before you start spraying. Work from the arm when spraying geometric patterns on the wall, not from the wrist. Wipe the nozzle and air cap of the paint sprayer regularly to prevent the nozzle from clogging.

The FLEXiO offers another advantage for multi-colour projects: You do not have to clean the unit before each colour change. Just change the paint container instead! This makes the FLEXiO ideal for a wide variety of wall designs, such as spraying wall stripes or ombré colour gradients.

Wall paint is often rather viscous, therefore, check the container to see whether dilution with water is possible. Stir the paint properly to remove any lumps. After a quick test spray and adjustment of the amount of paint and air, the device is ready for the paint application.
