Designing flower pots with Eva Brenner

No wonder terracotta pots are so popular: The clay pots are extra stable, durable and look good indoors and outdoors. But despite their Mediterranean charm, their plain colour often makes them seem a little boring and old-fashioned.

Star interior designer Eva Brenner shows you how to skilfully stage your plants in terracotta pots: With a few simple steps, you can transform your plain flowerpots into stylish show stoppers with a boho look. Here we show you exactly how this works and why it is particularly easy with a paint sprayer.

These are the materials you need to decorate flower pots

To get started with decorating your flower pots, you will need the following materials:

  • One or more old or new, untreated terracotta pots
  • Lacquer (Eva uses white here for a nice boho contrast)
  • Masking tape

All that's missing now are creative ideas for the patterns that will transform your terracotta pots into real boho show stoppers. Eva decides on vertical, horizontal and diagonal stripes.

Coloring flower pots: Which paint is best for painting flowerpots?

Clay pots can be painted with many different types of paints and varnishes. Acrylic varnish is probably the most suitable. It is weatherproof, so it can easily be used to decorate outdoor plant pots. Furthermore, acrylic paints are water-based paints. This makes them non-toxic and suitable if children are helping.

Paints suitable for concrete or granite can also be used and can make your terracotta pots shine in a whole new light. You can achieve a velvety powdery look for your painted flowerpot with chalk paint. Eva uses a white acrylic lacquer for her project.

We’ll show you how

Step 1 of 6: Preparation

Preparation

If you want to transform used flower pots, they must be thoroughly cleaned beforehand. To do this, soak them in warm water with a mild detergent. Then you can clean the terracotta pots with the help of a scrubbing brush or a sponge and scourer. They are then left in the sun to dry. With older pots, it is advisable to lightly roughen the surface with sandpaper so that the paint adheres better and is more evenly distributed.

Step 2 of 6: Prepare your workplace

Prepare your workplace

A table is ideal as a workplace. Make sure that it is a comfortable height, does not wobble and is some distance from other furniture. Protect the work surface with a paper or plastic cover. The furniture in the adjacent area should be covered with a dust sheet because of the spray. Make sure that all the materials you need are ready on the table.

Step 3 of 6: Paint the pattern on

Paint the pattern on

Using your tape measure and a pencil, mark the places where you want the patterns to be on your flowerpots and where you need to stick the tape.

Step 4 of 6: Patterns with the help of masking tape Stuck on to pots

Now you can apply the adhesive tape. Remember, the masked areas will not be covered with paint when sprayed. So if you want to cover your terracotta pot with horizontal stripes, you need to wrap it all around with masking tape. The distance between the adhesive strips corresponds to the thickness of the strips of your design. To get a vertical stripe pattern, Eva puts the tape on the top of the second pot and sticks it towards the bottom. For the diagonally striped third flowerpot, she also sticks the adhesive strips diagonally. However, there are no limits to your creativity when decorating and painting - try out what other patterns you can create with the help of the masking tape.

Step 5 of 6: Preparation of the sprayer and spraying process

Now you can get started. Fill the paint into the paint container of your WAGNER paint sprayer and dilute with water if necessary. Carry out a spray test and adjust the settings of the sprayer. Now spray your clay pots by holding the sprayer perpendicular to the object and spraying it with even pressure and a uniform distance of about 10 cm.

Step 6 of 6: Carefully remove the masking tape and allow to dry

If the paint is still wet, you should peel off the tape slowly and carefully. Then allow the boards to dry completely. Et voilà, your stylish boho-look terracotta pot is finished and ready to be planted.

What to look out for when beautifying flowerpots with a paint sprayer

The primer:

As the surface of clay pots is porous and paint soaks in quickly, it can be beneficial to prime the flowerpots before spraying. The primer prevents the paint from being absorbed too quickly and gives you a smoother and more even finish.

The right spraying technique:

Before you start, the paint you are using should be warmed up to at least room temperature. This results in a durable protective film. The spraying movement is also important: It should come from the arm and not from the wrist. This ensures that the distance between the paint sprayer and the surface is always the same during the spraying process, and the final result is more uniform.

Important if you are designing several flowerpots at a time: The nozzle and air cap of the paint sprayer should be wiped regularly during use to prevent clogging of the nozzle. For more information, see our guide page Why spraying is better.

What does boho style actually mean?

The word Boho comes from Bohemian, a 19th century lifestyle influenced by subcultures and intellectual fringe groups such as artists and free spirits. Central elements of boho style in the field of interior design are colorful fabrics, rattan, wood and a variety of decorative elements. People like to use vintage materials such as velvet, but also impressions from other cultures, such as ethnic patterns or oriental decorations.
