Why should you paint the garage floor?

The garage is a place where petrol, oil and other chemical substances are worked with. Mechanical stresses caused by the heavy weight of the vehicles at certain points can also cause cracks in the ground. In winter, de-icing salt can also attack the soil. To protect your customer's garage floor from exposure to mechanical influences and harmful substances, it is important that the substrate is regularly coated or sealed. Painted floors are also easier to clean. The use of an airless paint sprayer saves time and energy when coating and ensures an even and smooth surface.

Before painting the garage floor: Check the condition of the floor

Before you start the garage floor painting, it is important to check the condition of the surface and make repairs if necessary:

  • Are there cracks in the floor? These must be repaired with filler.
  • Are there any irregularities in the floor and does it need to be smoothed down?
  • Are there oil or other stains from chemicals that need to be removed?
  • Is the ground sufficiently absorbent or does it need to be sanded again?
  • Is the ground too wet? Painting must only be carried out on a dry floor.
  • Are there dusty and loose spots on the surface? Then these should be removed or cleaned.

Epoxy resin paint is a 2-component paint based on epoxy resin as a binder. This paint repels water and chemicals and completely seals the floor. It is also suitable for floors that are exposed to heavy mechanical loads. The 2k garage floor coating is mixed shortly before spraying.

A step-by-step guide: painting a garage floor

We use the SuperFinish 23 CR diaphragm pump here. This is also suitable for working with epoxy resin. However, you can find out on the WAGNER website whether your sprayer is suitable for applying your desired material and how best to set it up to apply the garage floor coating material. Just take a look at our practical WAGNER spray guide.

Step 1 of 8: Preparation of the garage floor

Step 1: Preparation of the garage floor

Prepare the garage floor to be coated by jetwashing it if necessary and removing dust and dirt. Also repair any cracks or unevenness.

Step 2 of 8: Prepare the machine

Step 2: Prepare the machine

Attach the hose, gun, tip holder and appropriate tip on your airless sprayer and tighten all connection properly. Use a tip extension to easily reach the floor.

Step 3 of 8: Put on protective clothing

Always wear gloves, a protective mask and safety goggles during the following work steps.

Step 4 of 8: Mixing 2-component material together

Step 4: Mixing 2-component material together

Do you use a 2K coating material? Mix the two components and pour the paint into the hopper of your sprayer. Pay attention to the maximum working time after mixing to avoid premature curing when applying the paint.

Step 5 of 8: Adjust settings on the sprayer

Step 5: Adjust settings on the sprayer

Adjust your airless sprayer for the material you are using. To be sure, it is best to test your settings again on a piece of cardboard. You will find information about the perfect settings in the manufacturer's material data sheet and on our website.

Step 6 of 8: Spraying the edges

Step 6: Spraying the edges

Start by spraying the edges and borders of the floor. Tip: If the surrounding walls are also to be painted afterwards, you can save yourself time-consuming masking by using a cardboard spray guard to cut in the edges.

Step 7 of 8: Spraying the surface

Step 7: Spraying the surface

Using the WAGNER Airless sprayer, gives you a large working radius preventing the need to move the machine or the coating material. You can use the paint to completely coat the garage floor and protect it from harmful substances. When spraying, make sure to work parallel to the ground to avoid overspray.

Step 8 of 8: Leave to dry completely

Step 8: Leave to dry completely

Allow the coating material to dry and harden completely and then apply a second coat if necessary. The drying time of the garage floor paint can be found on the container or in the material data sheet from the paint manufacturer.
