Step by step Instructions for building your own wooden trellis

Step 1: Cutting and sanding beams

Step 1: Cutting and sanding the battens

You can have battens or wood cut to size at the DIY store. If this is not possible, the easiest way is to use a saw or jigsaw. For cutting, it is best to clamp the boards on your workbench with a clamps. After cutting, smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Step 2: Painting wood with paint sprayer

Step 2: Painting wood with paint sprayer

When painting the trellis use a paint sprayer to apply non-toxic paint or stain for outdooruse. You do not need to thin the stain. However, you should dilute paint by up to 10 %.

Adjust the amount of air and paint on the paint sprayer and test the spray on a piece of cardboard. You can spray particularly precisely with a thin spray strip. To adjust the paint sprayer, you should reduce the spray angle using the nozzle at the front. Spray the wooden battens from an even distance. . You can find more information in our instructions for painting wooden trellis.

Step 3: Connecting wooden battens

Step 3: Connecting wooden battens

To assemble the trellis, connect the wooden battens to form a square trellis. Depending on the size, you should place a certain number of wooden battens in front of you in a vertical alignment with a distance of approx. 20 cm between them (A). Place the same number of wooden battens horizontally aligned above it (B). Our tip: Use an approx. 20 cm long remnant piece as a spacer (C).

At the intersections, now fasten the horizontal battens to the cross braces with nails (D). This results in a grid structure. The outer edge ends with a batten in each case.

Step 4: Screw the trellis to the wall

Step 4: Screw the trellis to the wall

Drill four holes on the trellis and at the same time drill the holes into the wall (see sketch). Insert the plastic wall plugs into the wall. Then connect the trellis with screws to the wall plugs in the wall.

Make sure that there is enough air so that the plants can also grow up between the trellis and the wall.
