Tips and hints: Removing wallpaper with steam

With the new WAGNER SteamForce, the removal of wallpaper with steam is even easier! To help you remove old wallpaper easily, we have collected some tips and hints for you on this page.
We present the new steam wallpaper remover from WAGNER here in the video and give you a brief summary of our tips:

The work preparation process

Good preparation makes work easier and saves time and effort until the final tidying and cleaning. Here are our tips on this:

Tip 1: Prepare the work area

With the WAGNER SteamForce, removing wallpaper is easier than ever - and you don't even need chemicals to do it. Pure steam dissolves the wallpaper paste. Accordingly, you do not have to worry about endangering your health or damaging surrounding surfaces. Nevertheless, the wallpaper residue gets softened and the paper parts become somewhat liquid. Both can therefore be easily removed. We still recommend a careful covering of the floor. This saves you the trouble of cleaning the floor afterwards. It is also best to provide yourself with a container for the wallpaper scraps directly!

Tip 2: Remove all objects from the wall

It sounds obvious at first, but make sure you really have taken everything off the wall. This includes not just obvious picture frames, but also little things like hooks and nails and other fastening objects, smoke detectors and, if necessary, the light switches.

Tip 3: Mask the light switch

If it is not necessary to remove all covers from light switches and sockets, it is best to mask them. Here, too, you save yourself the time-consuming removal of wallpaper paste residues and hardened wallpaper paste at the end.

Tip 4: Perforate the wallpaper

Using a nail roller, spiked roller or a wallpaper hedgehog, it is a good idea to perforate the old wallpaper in advance. This is especially necessary if the wallpaper has been painted over, if it is waterproof like vinyl wallpaper or if there are several layers of wallpaper. Through the perforation, the water vapour can penetrate the surface of the wallpaper faster and better and dissolve the wallpaper paste. Roll over the wallpaper a few times with the device of your choice. Do not press too hard to avoid damaging the substrate.

Higher work efficiency

The new SteamForce steam wallpaper remover already has increased performance. With a few hints you can make your work even more efficient:

Tip 5: Add warm water

You can save time by pouring warm, not cold, water directly into the steam wallpaper remover. This means that the unit requires less heating time and is ready for use more quickly!

Tip 6: Place the steam wallpaper stripper on a flat surface

Place the unit's water tank on a level surface. If the unit is tilted or wobbled, this may damage the heating element. Otherwise, use a board or panel to ensure a level, as straight a surface as possible.

Tip 7: Ensure correct use

By paying attention to a few small things when using your SteamForce, you will make your work much easier because that's when it works best. Lay the steam plate completely flat on the wallpaper. This way you trap the steam under the plate and it cannot escape. Hold the steam plate like this for about 10 seconds. Then, when you remove the steam plate to remove the wallpaper, place it directly on the next spot with your other hand so that you do not waste water and time.

Tip 8: Do not hold the steamer plate in one place too long

Protect the surface under the wallpaper by placing the steam plate on one spot for only about 10 seconds, no longer. Otherwise, you will moisten the substrate unnecessarily and it may be damaged. If there is a place where the wallpaper does not come off well, leave it for the moment. Come back to the stubborn piece of wallpaper again later.

Tip 9: Use the smaller steam plate in places that are difficult to reach

Around the light switches, along the skirting boards or around windows and doors, the smaller steam plate is ideal. This gives you more freedom of movement without steam being lost through protruding corners.

Tip 10: A scraper makes removing wallpaper easier

It may be that small pieces of wallpaper or paste stick to the wall. These can best be removed with a scraper. This also has the advantage that you do not have to touch the wallpaper, which is also hot.

Tidy up the work area

The faster you remove the wallpaper residues, preferably as you go along, the less they harden and have to be torn off or cleaned up later. For this purpose, it is best to use a rubbish bag directly, otherwise the wallpaper with the adhesive residues will dry in the container.

Important: regular descaling

Remember your kettle: If the heating coil calcifies, it takes longer for the water to boil. Limescale greatly reduces the performance of your appliance. Therefore, test your water once for the degree of hardness. If the hardness is low, you should descale the appliance after approx. 11 tank fillings, i.e. 44 litres. If the hardness is high, it is best after 6 tank fillings, i.e. 24 litres.

To do this, mix 1.5 litres of water with a commercially available descaling agent according to the manufacturer's instructions. Pour the mixture into the tank of the steam wallpaper stripper and let it work for about 30 minutes. Then empty the tank entirely and rinse it two or three times thoroughly with clean water to completely remove the descaling agent residues.

With regular descaling, you not only ensure that the heating coil functions perfectly and quickly, but also extend the life of your appliance!

Determine the degree of hardness

To prevent any reduction in performance or damage, the unit must be regularly descaled.

  1. Check the water hardness: go on the Internet or use a water hardness measuring strip.
  2. Compare your value with the table below to determine how often you need to descale your unit.
