Repainting ceiling with ornate mouldings: When the jobs get challenging, WAGNER has the answer, be Unstoppable

Kevin Steer and Martin Paine from Martin Paine Property Maintenance were commissioned to repaint the ceiling in this grand property located in Guildford, Surrey. They decided the only way to tackle a job like this was to use a WAGNER airless paint sprayer because of the four-meter-high ceilings with very ornate mouldings.

First, water staining caused by plumbing leaks had to be repaired and multiple cracks in the ceiling needed to be filled with flexible filler. The ceiling was then sprayed with two coats of paint. The entire project was completed using two men in only three days from start to finish.

The challenge that they faced was the height of the 4 meter ceilings. Not even the longest extension pole available from WAGNER of 2 meters would suffice. Therefore, his ingenious solution was to connect 4 x 60cm extension poles together to create a 2.4 metre extension! Because of the length he had to give it extra stability by attaching the extension poles to lightweight, aluminium angle bracket for strength and to ensure there was no flex in the pole. By using this method for the majority of the time they were able to complete the job without the need for ladders or scaffolding.

The machine used was the SF23 Plus, a WAGNER diaphragm pump sprayer. Typically they allow a 10% longer hose length than would normally be achievable with a comparable piston pump sprayer.

These machines can either be used with a direct suction hose, or in this instance Kevin used a hopper since it was easier to load the paint and clean up afterwards.

Kevin also used the TempSpray heated hose so he could reduce the pressure even when reaching the high ceilings. As the atomised paint is heated it also means that it sticks to the surface instantly. This reduces any overspray which was hugely important on this particular job because of the impressive room with hand carved wood panels on all the walls and fireplace.

Kevin commented, “before using airless spray paint technology this type of job would require a team of people to be up and down ladders or scaffolding using brushes to try and paint the ornate ceiling mouldings. The job would have taken a considerable amount of time and would be physically hard to complete. There was a large investment in the WAGNER SF23 Plus and TempSpray setup, however the reduction in labour time, paint usage and almost complete lack of overspray because of the heated hose makes it a pleasure to use.

Just for the record I only started using WAGNER airless sprayers a year ago and what a year it’s been.”
