Double diaphragm pumps from WAGNER: Functionality, application and advantages

Our sprayers are equipped with various conveying technologies that transport the coating material from the container to the spray gun. One of these is the double diaphragm pump. Here you can find out exactly what an air-operated diaphragm pump with double diaphragm is and how it works, what its advantages are and what materials it is used with.

What are double diaphragm pumps?

A double diaphragm pump is a technology for pumping certain materials. The pumped materials range from plaster to acids and alkalis as well as solvents, paints and varnishes and even liquid-solid mixtures, depending on the performance of the pump. All in all, the double diaphragm pump has a wide range of applications, you will also find it a lot in industry: for example in the chemical industry, in mechanical engineering or in the textile industry.

WAGNER paint sprayers are pneumatic double diaphragm pumps, i.e. a type of compressed air diaphragmpump. The compressed air moves the air piston in the air motor of the pump and thus also the piston rod up and down. In our pneumatic double diaphragm pumps WAGNER Cobra 40-25 and WAGNER Cobra 40-10 (AC) hydraulic oil is pumped to the diaphragm which in turn sets it in motion. The diaphragm sucks in the material and pushes it into the hose to the spray gun after changing direction.

The Zip 52 double diaphragm pump from WAGNER , on the other hand, does not work with hydraulic oil. It also works with a lower material pressure of maximum 8 bar. For comparison: The material pressure in the double diaphragm pumps WAGNER Cobra 40-25 and WAGNER Cobra 40-10 is 250 bar.

With the double diaphragm pump, as the name suggests, there are two diaphragms. These move in unison. While one diaphragm pressesthe material from the pump into the hose, the second simultaneously sucks in new material. This leads to reduced pulsation of the coating material

What is special about the WAGNER screw pump?

The air-operated double diaphragm pump from WAGNER is both powerful and has a long service life in a small and compact design. You can connect several spray gunsto the Zip 52 double diaphragm pump from WAGNER. In addition, the paint sprayers have a modular design so that you can assemble the perfect unit for your application from individual parts. The Zip 52 is the basic model, which can be ordered as a Perfect Flow or Spraypack model. However, you can also mount the Zip 52 on the wall or on a trolley - depending on its use. Equip the WAGNER unit with a hose with the ideal nominal diameter for your workshop or application and finally select the spray gun, nozzle and filter.

Tip: If you need more information on configuring a paint sprayer from WAGNER, take a look at the WAGNER Sprayguide! We have tested our equipment with various coating materials - from lacquers and paints to adhesives from various manufacturers. You will find all the configuration and delivery specifications for a flawless finish: Nozzle and filter, material temperature, spray viscosity and dilution as well as instructions for setting the unit such as the delivery pressure by spray pressure and air pressure, material quantity and air quantity, delivery rate and the selected form of material suction: flexible, rigid or with hopper.
This gives you a blueprint to follow!

To this end, the WAGNER Cobra 40-10 and the WAGNER Cobra 40-25 are suitable for use in potentially explosiveatmospheres in accordance with Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX). This means a double increase in occupational safety: On the one hand, the WAGNER pump is not a source of danger for the ignition of explosive gases, for example by working with chemicals, or liquids. On the other hand, as a manufacturer, we have developed the double diaphragm pump in such a way that the risk of an explosion from the device itself has been minimised enormously.

The Zip models are therefore also available in different versions: a metal version with a pump housing made of aluminium and stainless steel, and versions with conductive acetal or non-conductive polypropylene (a thermoplastic).

#1 Material handling

The air-driven double diaphragm pump offers various advantages over other pumping technologies. On the one hand, the flow of the material has significantly less pulsation and the material delivery and the spray jet is more even. In addition, it is dry-running safe: Should air get into the material feed chamber, for example because an air bubble has formed in the material in the hopper, the sprayer will still function and there will be no problems with the machine, despite briefly running dry.

#2 Maintenance

As with all WAGNER units, the maintenance and the installation of spare parts ismade quickby the easy access to all components of the machine . Whether the ball of the valve, a seal or another spare part: They can be changed quickly. In your operating instructions for the spray pack or Zip or Cobra sprayer, you will also find a list of all spare parts directly with item number at the end!

Which materials can be processed with a screw pump?

The air-operated diaphragm pump with a double diaphragm can process many materials of medium viscosity, such as:

  • Water- and solvent-based lacquers
  • Enamel paints
  • Oils
  • Separating agents
  • Primers
  • filler
  • Synthetic resin-based paints, PVC paints, 2-K lacquers
  • Anti-corrosive paints
  • Latex paints

Areas of application for the double diaphragm pump

The WAGNER units, which are equipped with a double diaphragm pump with compressed air, are suitable for a wide range of applications. On the one hand, you will often find them stationary, for example in workshopsthat work with metal or wood : with carpenters and joiners or metalworkers.

Mobile , it is used for large-scale operations , for example when steel structures have to be treated . You can also coat aluminium with these paint sprayers without any problems.

The differences between the screw pumps and the other WAGNER delivery technologies

At WAGNER, various conveying technologies are used in the paint spraying units. These include:

Wagner Group Gerätetechnologie Membranpumpe

Diaphragm pump

The diaphragm pump works without compressed air and only with one instead of two delivery diaphragms. It is installed in many paint sprayers that are used in particular for low to medium viscosity materials .

Piston pump

The piston pump delivers the coating material directly via a piston, without a diversion via a diaphragm. It also handles materials with higher viscosity, with a large piston pump you can easily spray filler, for example.
