Turbine paint sprayers: Setup and function

The turbine paint sprayer that feature HVLP and XVLP technology are equipped with small turbines which atomise the material with the help of air pressure. The turbine makes the devices all the easier to operate, so that they can be used easily by both trades people and DIY enthusiasts. Here we explain the function of a turbine paint sprayers and how it is constructed, what makes our turbines so special and for.

What are turbine paint sprayers?

The WAGNER turbine paint sprayer is a motorised fans: A motor turns a compressor wheel which draws in air and moves it through the turbine. The atomising air is then forced through an air hose into the material container. The resistance at the nozzle compresses the air and therefore builds up pressure - and this in turn forces the materials through the suction tube and out of the nozzle, where it is atomised with the remaining air.

What is special about a WAGNER turbine sprayer?

At WAGNER, we continuously develop our technologies to make them even more efficient and even more powerful: in other words, to achieve better performance with the same or lower energy requirements.

Therefore, the XVLP turbine paint sprayer technology is a further development of our HVLP technology. HVLP stands for "high volume, low pressure " and XVLP stands for "eXtra volume, low pressure", so you can probably already guess what we have improved. The XVLP turbine operates with up to 60% more air volume and allows 30% more area coverage than the HVLP turbine. For this purpose, our units have a modular design. They consist of the turbine and various spray attachments: FineSpray, WallSpray and StandardSpray. This gives you the highest possible flexibility when processing different materials. And with our Click&Paint system, changing materials or colours is simple, as you can easily swap out the attachment. With all XVLP units, the air volume and the material quantity can be adjusted directly on the gun. The low-pressure spraying system with an air pressure of 0.7 bar means less overspray at a high working speed.

Two of our three XVLP spray attachments have the trend-setting Visco nozzle technology with a large, flat jet. This design guarantees a high working speed and best surface quality even with thicker materials.

The WAGNER turbine paint sprayers with XVLP technology therefore combine the positive properties of low-pressure spraying with those of the high-pressure spraying process: low overspray, low material loss while still achieving fine atomisation.

We know from experience that a laborious cleaning process is (understandably) a pain for tradespeople. In the case of regular use with many materials, there must be zero risk of material mixing in the machine itself. Therefore, all our fine spray systems and paint sprayers are easy to dismantle and the individual parts can be cleaned thoroughly but quickly. In addition, this has the advantage that you can easily purchase specific accessories or spare parts and tailor the unit to your individual use.

Advantages of a turbine paint sprayers

Lightweight

Lightweight

The WAGNER turbine paint sprayers are among our most compact and lightweight paint sprayers available. Many of them are hand-held devices and therefore offer maximum freedom of movement.

The low-pressure turbine paint sprayer has another advantage: There is significantly less material loss. The low pressure results in less overspray and less paint mist in the air.

Which materials can be processed with a worm pump?

With our advanced XVLP turbine technology, you can use low-viscosity materials such as wood and metal paints, for example to coat wood - but also medium viscosity materials such as emulsion. You can process the following materials with the turbine:

  • Solvent-based paints
  • Water-based paints
  • Stains
  • Wood protection
  • Oils
  • Primers
  • Anti-corrosive paints
  • Emulsion paint

Of course, always refer to the operating instructions of your WAGNER turbine paint sprayer before you use a new material.

Which applications are turbine paint sprayers suitable for?

The WAGNER turbine is one of the most flexible material delivery technologies. The turbine powered units are easy to use, very manoeuvrable and can atomise many materials to a high quality finish. They are suitable for DIY, due to their simple operation, as well as for contractors.

The turbine units are designed for an area of up to 50 m2 and are therefore suitable for touch-up work or small renovations. They are also practical for surfaces and areas that are very intricate - such as grooved floors or kitchens and for coating all kinds of furniture. The XVLP turbine units are also recommended for small outdoor jobs - such as repainting railings and grilles.

The turbines with XVLP technology are therefore not only perfect for getting started with spraying, but they also round off any equipment needed for a painter or trades person.

What types of delivery technologies are available at WAGNER in addition to the turbine?

Our turbine sprayer are the only delivery technology that works exclusively with air pressure and volume. Alternatives to this to this are the pumps: Material pressure is built up here. Most of them are airless - but with plaster and filler materials, a compressor is needed to build up the necessary pressure and atomise the material. In addition to the WAGNER turbine, there are four different paint delivery technologies available:

Diaphragm pump

Diaphragm pump

Here, the material is drawn in by the movement of a diaphragm and then forced through a hose to the nozzle where it is atomised.

The piston pump works differently. Here, the material is sucked directly into the cylinder by the stroke movement of a piston and pressed into the hose; there is no intermediate step here like conveying via the diaphragm. Spraying exterior paints is no problem with this powerful delivery technology.

One type of diaphragm pump is the double diaphragm pump. This has two diaphragms that move evenly with each other and therefore simultaneously suck in and pump out material.

Finally, WAGNER also offers the worm pump. It is the powerhouse for even the coarsest and thickest of materials - you can use it to spray plaster, for example. A rotating screw displaces the material, forcing it along the hose to the spray tip.

WAGNER paint sprayers with turbine

The WAGNER turbine sprayers are designed for trades people but are also suitable for (ambitious) DIY enthusiasts. In most instances, HVLP turbines are sufficient for DIY, while XVLP paint sprayers are designed for professionals.

XVLP paint sprayers

The FinishControl 3500 is a hand-held unit that is extremely compact and practical, precisely for working in small intricate areas. It is particularly practical when there are many small jobs to be done in many different places - such as repainting the doors or window frames in a house.

The FinishControl XVLP 5000 turbine spray system has a much lighter gun thanks to the separate turbine. It is also ideal, for example, for joineries and other manufacturing trades that want to coat their finished work. But it is also ideal for radiators, woodwork and kitchen renovations.

The FineCoat 9900 Plus is the unbeaten coating specialist in this product family. It has a 5-stage high-performance turbine and an ergonomic, power-saving spray gun as well as a 5-metre long air hose with a quick coupling adapter to attach or remove the gun.

HVLP paint sprayers

The WAGNER HVLP turbine spray gun is designed for the DIY sector. The turbine output is perfectly suited for low-viscosity substances such as wood and metal paints and lacquers. But even medium viscositypaints such as wall and ceiling paints are no problem. Different spray attachments guarantee a fine spray pattern. This makes the spray systems with the turbines ideal all-rounders with the best price-performance ratio for use in projects in your own home!
